The “Summer Slide” is the distinct learning loss that students can experience when out of school. “A regression in academic proficiency due to summer break, experts warn it is hindering kids’ progress when they head back to school.” (Scholastic)

Studies show that scholl-aged children lose academic growth in reading and math over their long summer break. This loss subsequently results in continued challenges causing children to continue to fall behind in the next academic year. Think of it as taking one step forward in learning, then two steps back during Summer Break. 

A recent study of children in 3rd to 5th grades also showed that students lost, on average, about 20 percent of their school-year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school-year gains in math during summer break.” 

The American Educational Research Association states in a 2020 article following U.S. students across five summers, that between grades 1 and 6, a little more than half (52 percent) experienced learning losses in all five summers, according to a large national study  published today. These learners lost approximately 39% percent of their total academic gains during each summer. The study appeared in American Educational Research Journal, a peer-reviewed publication of the American Educational Research Association.
